The Senate on April 8 unanimously approved Senate Bill 612, which would allow parents and guardians to file civil lawsuits against social media platforms if their design, algorithm, or features knowingly cause harm to a minor. The bill aims to hold platforms accountable in cases where online features contribute to suicide attempts, substance abuse, eating disorders, or social media addiction.
Spearheaded by Sen. Tyler Dees and backed by Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the bill allows for monetary damages, medical and funeral costs, and attorney's fees, and sets a four-year statute of limitations. It includes a safeguard for platforms that correct harmful content within 30 days—except in suicide cases—and exempts liability for third-party or constitutionally protected content.
The bill now goes to the House of Representatives for a vote.
