Natural Environment: #35

In the 2024 U.S. News & World Report rankings, Arkansas secured the 35th position nationally for its natural environment, placing it in the upper third among U.S. states. This ranking reflects the state's commendable air quality and pollution levels, coupled with a burgeoning outdoor recreation sector.

🌬️ Air Quality and Pollution: A Breath of Fresh Air

Arkansas benefits from generally good air quality. The state's Air Quality Index (AQI) has been improving, with a 6% decrease in fine particle pollution from 2021 to 2023 compared to 2014 to 2016. This improvement is notable despite emissions from sources like the Flint Creek power plant and the Eco-Vista Landfill.

The Little Rock metro area, however, faces challenges with short-term particle pollution and ozone levels. In 2024, it ranked 124th worst in the nation for short-term particle pollution and 71st worst for ozone pollution. Nonetheless, the year-round average levels in Pulaski County were below the federal standard, indicating overall compliance with air quality standards.

🏞️ Outdoor Recreation: Embracing the Natural State

Arkansas's natural beauty offers abundant opportunities for outdoor activities. The state is home to over 600,000 acres of lakes, providing venues for boating, fishing, and water sports. Additionally, the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism awarded $3.85 million in Outdoor Recreation Grants in 2025 to enhance parks and trails across 20 counties, further expanding access to recreational spaces.

Recent developments include the opening of the Ward Lake Trail System in Mena, featuring over seven miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and trail running. These initiatives reflect a growing commitment to outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship.

🌿 Looking Ahead

Arkansas's 35th-place ranking in natural environment underscores its strengths in air quality and outdoor recreation, with room for improvement in pollution control. Continued investments in environmental policies and infrastructure will be crucial to enhancing the state's natural environment and maintaining its appeal as a destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
